In 1759 he was recorded as a clayer (a potter who made the clay pots in which the sugar was formed into loaves). In 1771 and 1781 he was also a cane watchman. By 1781 he was described as 'old' and in 'middling health' Quaco was born at Turners Hall and was married to Edey. His name is an African day-name, traditionally given to a boy born on a Wednesday.
