Malcolm Laing bought Accra from William Gray in 1769 and sent him to Grange Hill. His name suggests that he may have originated from modern-day Ghana, possibly having been imprisoned in one of the slave forts of Accra before being transported to Jamaica. He was recorded at Grange Hill in 1771 and 1777; in 1777 he was working in the fields.
