The cable tramway which ran from the centre of Matlock up Bank Road to Smedley's Hydro was a feature of local life in the early 20th century. Financed by Sir George Newnes (1851-1910), baronet, the Matlock Tramway Company Ltd was incorporated on 27 January 1891. The tramway opened in 1893.
