In 1976 a proposal was made for alterations to Southwood House (run by Barnardo's) in order to provide a "residential unit for emotionally disturbed children", with 30 boarding and 10 day places. The centre closed in 1997, being replaced by the Holbrook Centre for Autism, later known as Holbrook School for Autism.
