The estate had been bought in the early sixteenth century from the Touchet family by Sir John Mundy, Lord Mayor of London 1522-1523, who claimed Derbyshire family connections. His descendants were connected with Markeaton until the early twentieth century. Edward Mundy was descended from a younger son of John Mundy of Markeaton, great great grandson of Sir John.
