Family Jessop; Family; Butterley, Ripley DS/UK/M/4120 Jessop Jessop Family Butterley, Ripley Butterley, Ripley The Jessop family are descended from William Jessop, born in Devonport in 1754, who in 1791 joined what was to become the Butterley Company. A distinguished engineer who undertook commissions all over the country, William died at Butterley in November 1814. ¶ ¶His eldest son, John, became an army major and married Martha M de Burgh. Major Jessop died in 1869, to be succeeded by his eldest son, William, the last member of the family to be a partner in the Butterley Company. ¶ ¶Of the first William Jessop s six other sons, four were involved in some way with the Butterley Company. These were Josias (d1826), William (d1852), Henry and George, who together formed the iron company Jessop & Co in India about 1820.
