At the time of the Domesday survey in 1086 Thorpe was a berewick of the manor of Ashbourne, which was part of the King’s own lands. In 1245 the manor of Thorpe was held by Ralph de Hormanwell. It later belonged to the Wythen family, from whom it passed to the Cockayne family. At the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the manor was purchased by John Milward. It then passed after one generation to Charles Adderley. In 1817 it was held by Charles Bowyer Adderley. In the late 19th century the manor was purchased by Sir William Fitzherbert.
