Corporate Repton; Manor of Repton Priors; Manor DS/UK/M/3846 Manor of Repton Priors Manor Repton

At the time of the Domesday survey in 1086 Repton was part of the King’s ancient desesnes. Maud, widow of Ranulph de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester (died 1153), founded Repton Priory in 1172. The Priory’s endowment was later augmented by a moiety of the manor of Repton, which had belonged the earls of Chester. The Priory’s moiety seems to have become a distinct manor in its own right. On the Dissolution of the Priory in 1538, the manor and the site of the Priory itself was sold to Thomas Thacker. It remained with the Thacker family until 1728, when it passed to Sir Robert Burdett. It remained with the Burdett family, with Sir Francis Burdett still being described as lord of the manor in 1817. Sir Francis Burdett and Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe were described as joint lords of the manor in 1895. Geographic Extent The lands of Repton Priory in Repton and the township of Southwood.
