It is thought that the manor was made up of other distinct manors referred to in Domesday as belonging to the Crown or William Peveril, but granted later as one whole by Henry I to William Peveril under the description of “my lordship of the Peak” (excluding those already granted away, e.g. Eyam and Nether Haddon). With the attainder of William Peveril at the start of the reign of Henry II, the manor of High Peak became the property of the Crown. Other manors (Glossop, Bakewell, Ashford and Tideswell) were granted away by Henry II and his immediate successors. Edward III granted the castle, manor and forest of High Peak to his son, John, and his heirs, by which they became part of the Duchy of Lancaster. The manor was leased by the Duchy from the early 17th century to the Cavendish family, later the Dukes of Devonshire.
