At the time of the Domesday survey in 1086, Holmesfield was held by Walter de Ayncourt. It remained in the possession of the Deincourt family until the reign of King Henry VI and the death of William Deincourt before 1461. His two daughters and co-heiresses married Ralph, Lord Cromwell, and William, Lord Lovell. Subsequently the Lovells obtained the whole manor, but following the attainder of Francis, Lord Lovell in 1487, the manor was granted to Sir John Savage. It remained with the Savage family until it was purchased in 1586 from John Savage by Sir John Manners. The manor remained with the Manners family, later the Earls, then the Dukes, of Rutland, down into the 20th century.
