It was granted by William to Lenton Priory during the reign of Henry I. It remained with the Priory until its dissolution, after which it became property of the Crown. In 1552 the manor was granted to Sir William Cavendish of Hardwick, and it descended with the Cavendish family, later the Dukes of Devonshire, into the 20th century.
There is also said to be another manor, which belonged to the Blackwells from an early period. During the reign of Charles II, this manor was said to have been sold or granted to the Hope family.</Nationality>
