Whittington Hall, Woodmere Drive, Chesterfield

Whittington Hall was founded by Revd Harold Nelson Burden (1860-1930) in 1902 as a home for "inebriates", a forerunner to the Burden Trust. From 1912 it was known as Home for the Care of the Feeble-Minded, later Instutution for the Mentally Defective, housing around 350-400 inmates. It was referred to in the 1939 National Register as the National Institution for Persons Requiring Care and Control. No patient records for the institution are known to have survived. Some management records for the Incorporation of National Institutions for Persons Requiring Care and Control (1902-1948), later The Burden Trust, are held at Bristol Archives, reference 40756.
