Located just south of Ashbourne, the hospital was built for the United States Air Force during World War II, specifically for possible casualties from the D-Day landings. The hospital was converted to HM Prison Sudbury in 1948. During the Second World War the military hospital was used as a prisoner of war camp. It operated as Camp 23, Camp 1004 and Camp 1023, which indicates a changing role of the site. Camp 1023 was a German work camp, where prisoners were likely sent to work on nearby farms.
