He was elected as Member of Parliament for Derbyshire in 1654 in the First Protectorate Parliament, in 1656 for the Second Protectorate Parliament, and in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament. He inherited the baronetcy in 1671 and became High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1673.
