The Bate family owned plantations in Barbados, and Richard Bate married the daughter of another plantation owner, Sarah Newton, in 1677. She inherited plantations herself in 1680.

Peter, therefore, was likely an enslaved child on one of their Barbados plantations who was shipped to England after the Bate family moved from Barbados to Foston Hall in Derbyshire; Black page boys were fashionable in the late 1600s and well into the 1700s. No further evidence of Peter's life has yet been discovered.</Activity>
