Person Wainwright; Jacob ([c1859]-1892); attendant to explorer David Livingstone DS/UK/4235 Wainwright Jacob Yamuza [c1859]-1892 attendant to explorer David Livingstone Male Yao people African Yamuza was born into the Yao people based at the southern end of Lake Malawi in East Africa. After being kidnapped by Arab slave traders, he was rescued by a British anti-slavery ship, educated by the Church Missionary Society in Bombay and baptised Jacob Wainwright. At around the age of fourteen, Jacob became part of Stanley's expedition to find the explorer David Livingstone. After Stanley and Livingstone met in 1871, Wainwright was then employed by Livingstone to accompany him to East Africa. When Dr Livingstone died in 1873, Jacob was the only one of his attendants who could speak and write English. He accompanied Dr Livingstone's coffin back to England and was the only African pallbearer at his funeral, which took place on 18 April 1874. He afterwards travelled around England addressing meetings of the Church Missionary Society before travelling back to Africa later that year. He died in April 1892 at the London Missionary Society mission in Urumbo District in modern Tanzania.
