A parish council had been established in Tansley by the Local Government Act of 1894. An order of 1923 saw the civil parish of Tansley incorporated into the Matlock Urban District and Tansley Parish Council was abolished. A new parish council was created in 1980 by the West Derbyshire (Parishes) Order.
