First registered on 2 April 1891 the company was formed by Derby businessmen and gentlemen to purchase the virtually defunct Stanley Kilburn Colliery to develop the working of the Kilburn Seam in the parishes of Stanley and Morley as well as deal in iron, brick, tiles, etc. It sank a new pit called Stanley Footrill Colliery, which effectively took over the working of coal from the nearby Stanley Kilburn Colliery, which was stil used for pumping and ventilation purposes. The company also acquired land at Chaddesden for the site of a coal wharf at Chaddesden, the company's strategy being to use it as a base from which to sell coal in the market provided by the borough of Derby and its surrounding villages. A tramway was built between Stanley Footrill Cilliery and Chaddesden Wharf and formally opened in a ceremony on 20 Nov 1894. The company initially prospered and there were plans in 1912 to build a second tramway to link with the Great North Railway at Stanley Junction. During the First World War, in 1916, the company got into difficutlies, going into receivership. It would seem to have been wound up in 1918, with the last of its freehold land being sold at auction on 12 Dec 1919.
