Winner of four world championships, 12 consecutive British titles, three Commonwealth gold medals and two Olympic medals. Martin worked as an electrician for British Rail in the 1960s and trained for his sport at Cockpit Hill gym.. After retiring from weightlifting he coached at Derby's Crosby Street gym. Married Ann Robinson, 1964, they had two sons.
