Pye Hill Colliery was sunk in 1874 by James Oakes and Co Ltd in an area littered with old colliery workings. It was originally known as New Silkstone Colliery before being re-named Pye Hill Colliery in 1894. Around it grew the new coal mining community of Jacksdale. The colliery was linked to New Selston Colliery, when it opened in 1892. After the nationalisation of the coal industry it became part of the National Coal Board, going into East Midlands Division Area No. 5. On restructuring of the NCB in 1967 it went into the South Nottinghamshire Area. In 1968 it merged with Selston and Underwood collieries to become part of one large complex known as Pye Hill. Selston became the administartive base, Underwood was used for access to coalfaces and production developments, and Pye Hill was used for surface drift mining (re-named Pye Hill No. 2), a coal preparation plant and the dispatch of coal by rail to Trent Valley power stations. The Pye Hill complex was closed down in 1985.
