The colliery was first sunk by Stanton Ironworks Company Ltd between 1925 and 1928. Early in the colliery's history, a water pipe broke and fell down the shaft creating flooding in the mine in March 1927, killing 14 miners. A memorial to this accident in the shape of a miner’s lamp was unveiled in 2011. It now also shows those who died in accidents during the life of the colliery, including a gas explosion in 1934, which killed 9 miners and injured many others. The colliery was transferred into the control of the National Coal Board following the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947. It was part of the East Midlands Division of the NCB, within Area No. 3. The mine finally closed in 1997.
