Located near Woodthorpe to exploit the Top Hard coal seam. The coal produced here was mainly used for industrial purposes or house coal. Sinking began in 1855 and the first coal was produced three years later. The colliery was named after one of the directors of the Staveley Company. One hundred cottages, known as Seymour Cottages, were built to accommodate the workers. They were all provided with outbuildings and space for an allotment. These were demolished in 1932 as they were deemed unfit for habitation It closed in 1918 after the coal reserves began to run out. At its peak, it was known to produce over 1,000 tons a day.
