The first shaft would seem to have been sunk by Humphrey Goodwin in 1838. Shady Colliery, as it was known then, became the major colliery complex of the area, with other shafts built close by named Balguy and Landsale. By 1846 it was jointly owned by William Goodwin and John Coupland. With the failure of William Goodwon's business interests in 1851, Coupland became sole owner. In September 1852 Coupland entered into partnership with Sir Charles Seely and John Kirk Keyworth. In November 1855, the partnership was dissolved, with Seely becoming sole owner. In 1875 the name was changed from Shady Colliery to New Birchwood Colliery. It would seem that the colliery continued to be run by Charles Seely and Company until some time between 1904 and 1908, when it was being operated by the Babbington Coal Company (itself purchased by Sir Charles Seeley, also in 1875). It continued to be operated by the Babington Coal Company until the colliery was closed in 1942.
