In 1851, the Derby County Asylum "for the lunatic poor" at Mickleover became the first publicly-funded hospital in Derbyshire, accommodating both pauper and private patients.  The visiting committee reported to County Quarter Sessions until 1889 when responsibility transferred to the new Derbyshire County Council. Under the Mental Deficiency Act of 1913 the Council were required to appoint a committee for the 'care of mental defectives', and to provide institutional accommodation where needed. The institution was renamed in 1929 to become the Derbyshire Mental Hospital, and renamed again in the mid-twentieth century to become Pastures Hospital.  Having transferred to the National Health Service in 1948, the hospital was closed in 1993 as part of the reorganisation of mental health care.
