After successful trial bores by the owner of Coton Park Estate, its underlying coal was advertised for purchase or lease. It came to the attention of Charles Binns, who together with George Hague and Edward Ellis formed the Coton Park Colliery Company in November 1866 to pioneer the development of mining in the area, with leases being made with several landowners in 1867 for minerals under land containing over 1150 acres Two shafts were sunk in 1867-1869. The name of the colliery was changed in 1871 to Netherseal Colliery following the opening of a different Coton Park Colliery nearby. It worked the Kilburn, Eureka, Stockings and Woodfield coal seams. The highest recorded manpower was 825 in 1922. The underground haulage system used onsite was worked by using compressed air. It was the first of its kind to be used in the South Derbyshire area. It was also served by a railway branch line on the surface. The Colliery was brought by Moira Colliery Company Ltd in 1942. However, Moira only worked the site for 4 years because of flooding issues and impending nationalisation, which meant that control of it was transferred to the National Coal Board in Jan 1947.
