It worked the Silkstone, Blackshale, Threequarter and Deep Hard coal seams. During the late 19th century, an experimental coal washing machine was introduced. The colliery was transferred into the control of the National Coal Board following the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947. The highest manpower recorded was 1,033 in 1956 and highest output 390,472 tons in 1955. The colliery eventually closed in 1965,just over a century after it was first sunk.

Housing for the colliery's workers was supplied in nearby Stonebroom. The welfare offered for these employees was extended on site when the pithead baths were built in 1936.
