The first sinking was made in 1896 by the Shirebrook Coliery Company Limited, incorporated in 1895. During the sinking process, there was an accident during the sinking, where 1 man was killed and 5 injured, after a winding rope broke. In 1908 the colliery has a workforce of 1345 underground and 282 surface workers. There were many facilities onsite including a boiler plant, screening plant, washery with slurry flocculation plant, blacksmiths, pithead baths, wood and electrical shops.An aerial ropeway was added in 1923, which was extended at various times between 1928 and 1944. The railway sidings that served the colliery were too small for the amount of coal leaving the site. By 1925, these were etended to given allow for more full and empty wagon sidings. The colliery was transferred to the control of the National Coal Board in 1947 as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry. The underground workings were connected with those at Pleasley Colliery in 1978. The two collieries were officially merged in 1983. Shirebrook closed in 1993 as the penultimate colliery in the North Derbyshire coalfield. During the lifetime of the colliery, an output of over a million tons was achieved at least 17 times.
