The colliery was first sunk in 1875 on land near Heanor owned by the Miller Mundy family. At its height, the mine once employed 1,500 men. In 1943 there was a gas explosion that led to the deaths of 4 miners and injured 2 others. It was caused when shot-firing at a supply gate. With the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947, Coppice Colliery was transferred into the control of the National Coal Board. The colliery was closed in 1966.
