He served as surgeon on the Hecla during the expedition under William Edward Parry to Spitsbergen in 1827; he was appointed as surgeon and naturalist on H.M.S. Terror on the Antarctic expedition led by James Clark Ross, 1839-1843; he proposed a party to search for Sir John Franklin in small boats and sledges in Wellington Channel, the Boothia peninsula and King William Island, but although his suggestions were soundly based, as later proved, they were rejected by the Admiralty; he served as surgeon on H.M.S. North Star under William Pullen in 1852, and got the opportunity to explore the Wellington Channel in the "Forlorn Hope" in 1852, but found no trace of Franklin's expedition, returning home in Oct 1853; he was awarded the Arctic medal in 1857.
