He was first taught architectural drawing by James Malton and/or Thomas Malton jun; he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1783 and won a silver medal in 1784 and a gold medal there in 1786; he continued to exhibit drawings at the Royal Academy until 1814; his most important work was done for Sir Gerald Noel, for whom he built the nucleus of Exton Hall, Rutland (1811) and the neo-classical Stamford Hotel in Stamford, Lincolnshire (c.1811-1829).
