After he finished his seminary studies, in autumn 1844 he entered the Oblate novitiate in Longueuil, belonging to the community of Missionary Oblatesof Mary Immaculate. He had a strong calling to preach the Gospel to the Indians in the west of Canada. Although only aged 21, he was given charge of Catholic missionary work in the new vicariate apostolic in Hudson Bay and James Bay, and left Montreal in June 1845 on an expedition by canoe to St Boniface, Manitoba, in an area where the Obijwe people lived. He was ordained as a deacon in August and as a priest in October 1845 and also took his vows ot the Oblate oder in October 1845 . He was sent to start a mission in Île-a-la-Crosse in Saskatchewan, where he preached to Cree and Chipewyan native people. He was named Bishop of Arath in 1850 and Bishop of St Boniface in 1853, later going to become the first Archbishop of St Boniface in 1871.
