In 1850 he volunteered for one of the search expeditions to search for Sir John Franklin and his crews, prompted by a dream which he believed had shown him the right route. He serevd as doctor, purser and chief officer of the Prince Albert, a small vessel fitted out at the expense of Lady Franklin, under Commander Charles C. Forsyth. On his return Snow published Voyage of the Prince Albert in Search of Sir John Franklin (1851) and was awarded the polar medal. He spent the last quarter of his life obsessed with the Franlin expedition, compiling volumes of indexes of Arctic voyages, of notes and of biographical records of Arctic explorers.
