In 1850 he was appointed to command H.M.S. Pioneer in the Franklin search expedition under Captain H. Austin. He joined Sir Edward Belcher's expedition in 1852 but his ship, Pioneer, was abandoned along with other ships in August 1854. He went on to serve in military campaigns during the Crimean War and the Second Opium War in China.
