He sailed in Arctic waters as Assistant Surveyor to Captain Lyon in 1824; he sailed with Franklin as Assistant Surveyor, and together with John Richardson, he surveyed the north American coast between the Mackenzie and Coppermine rivers, 1825-1827. He took part in the  naval expedition to the South Atlantc as assistant surveyor under Henry Foster, from 1828-1830. In 1830 he helped to complete a survey of the west coast of Africa, after which he was sent on a confidential mission to help determine the boundary between New Brunswick and Maine. In 1833 he was emp1oyed by the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company, returning to England in 1838. From 1843 to his death in 1845 he was  Superintendent of the Peninsula and Oriental Steam Packet Company.
