Leader of expedition of Hudson's Bay Company to survey north west coast of Canada in 1846-1847. He joined John Richardson's search expedition for Sir John Franklin and his crews, 1848-1849. He led further expeditions in 1850-1851 and 1853-1854, during the latter discovering the fate of the Franklin expedition.
