Pupil of architect William Porden, apprenticed to him from 1790. He subsequently became an assistant of Henry Holland and supervised the latter's work at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton. He was known as a prolific designer of country mansions and picturesque cottages, advertising himself as being able to provide residences in a wide range of styles such as ''Old English', Tudor', 'Elizabethan' or half-timbered, and he published several volumes on various design styles. He was elected a member of the Society of Antiquaries in 1826 and was one of the first vice-presidents of the Institute of British Architects.
