In 1788, a canal was proposed to link the southern side of the Peak District to the Erewash Canal. Envisaged as a reliable and cheap transport system, the canal was supported by numerous local businessemen including Sir Richard Arkwright, owner of the cotton mills at Cromford. An Act of Parliament was passed in 1789 and the canal was fully opened in August 1794 and runs 14 miles from Cromford to Langley Mill, with a branch in Pinxton. It was taken over by the Midland Railway in 1870 and finally abandoned in 1944.
