He was educated at Rugby School by Dr Arnold; graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, 1839-1840; he sailed to Tasmania in 1840 to set up the first institution of higher education under Sir John Franklin's government; he became good friends of the Franklin family, with whom he stayed on arrival; having established Christ College and set up two feeder schools in Launceston and Hobart, he returned to England in 1848; he married Eleanor Isabella Franklin in 1849; he became Curate of St John's, Notting Hill and was later Rector of Buxted, Sussex from 1878. Son of Reverend Philip Gell; married Eleanor, daughter of the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin on 7 June 1849 at the church of St George, Bloomsbury Australian Dictionary of Biography online; "The Doctor's Disciples" by Frances J.
