Painted pleated fan with carved ivory sticks The ivory sticks of this fan are carved in oriental style; one stick is broken and the leaf of the fan has also been repaired at one fold. The rounded head where the sticks join indicates a likely early 18th century date. The leaf of the fan has a painted scene in ancient setting of a woman on divan being crowned with a laurel crown and confetti scattered by two putti, with a female attendant and two children next to divan, and, in the air, a goddess holding a horn of plenty. On the left in the distance can be seen a ship at sea. This may depict the story of Dido and Aeneas. The fan is edged in black, and painted in shades of black, grey and blue, suggesting that this was a mourning fan. On the reverse, the fan is painted with flowers in an oriental style in shades of blue. The sticks on the reverse have been painted with floral patterns. [early 18th cent]
