William Barker from Smyrna to his nephew John Barerk, esq., Bakewell Thanks for letter of 7 December; John now one of the ex’tors of Mr. Charlesworth; William hopes he will agree not to sell William’s house after his death, but that it be kept for his widow, children and legitimate grandchildren; consul ferry applied to Mr. Wilkinson for the letter of attorney, which he could not find, but gave a written undertaking to destroy it if found later: after William’s death, his ex’ors, of whom Mr Tomlinson in London is one, will apply to John for orders; if John wishes to appoint an agent in Smyrna, William proposes his brother-in-law Mr. George Perkins, as his son-in-law Mr. William Maltass is leaving, and has already sent his wife Mary (Mimica) and 6 children to England under care of William’s son Samuel; all his family at Smyrna well, except his wife who is rheumatic, and himself suffering from vertigo and failing sight; his son Richard engaged in counting house of Messrs. Hayes and Fontain, Henry with Messrs. Lee and Brant; Benjamin with his brother at Aleppo; Frederick in the counting house of Messrs. Webb and Co. at Leghorn; Edward in the secretaries office at Corfu; William has been troubled for the third time by his vagabond son George, whom he has fitted out again and who is now employed navigating a Swedish schooner to Algiers and Leghorn; his first wife is remarried in London, his 2nd he has left in Boston in America with two children; Grace has retired to Wales with her husband, and Sally (Sarula) is married to a Mr. Goodwin of Ludlow; respects to John’s wife and all relations at Bakewell.
