  <dc:title>Sheep Pasture Incline</dc:title>
  <dc:description>Colour transparency from an old sepia postcard of the incline by the Pointsman's Cabin and the Catch Pit as wagons ascend.  The Pointsman is holding the point lever in its stand-by position to direct wagons into the pit.  As the wagons approach the lever is pulled across against spring tension to enable the wagons to be redirected round the pit to Sheep Pasture Bottom if they are descending under control. The state of the descent is communicated to the Pointsman's gong on the cabin via a wire cable to the treadles between the rails depressed by the moving wagons as they descend the incline.  The original Derby-Manchester turnpike from the 1730s and 40s ran via Brassington.  It was not until the 1820s that the Ambergate-Matlock turnpike via the Derwent valley was initiated, this passed into local government control in 1888 when turnpikes were abolished.  The road in the background was then destined to become the A6.</dc:description>
