Steeplehouse & Wirks Goods The aftermath of the accident on 31st July 1955 following a derailment thought to be due to vandalism, when the points were open diverting the Middleton-bound train from the main line to the dead-end siding in the goods yard. 47000 tumbled 15 feet and ended up on its side at the end of the 60 yard long siding in the garden of Mrs. E. M. Brown and Mrs. J. Flint! The photograph was taken after 47000 had been uprighted with the aid of a 20 ton bulldozer and locomotive 41536. The locomotive was finally returned to the rails by the 2nd August and was sent to Derby for repairs. It was returned to the C&HPR on the 24th October 1955. Note all the onlookers watching the rescue attempt from the main line. 1955
