Further information: Mr Hawkins had an accident on 8 November 1954 when working as a coal face worker.  He was cutting coal and twisted right knee. He had previously injured his knee in 1951. After the accident he was working a bye-worker. On 2 May 1956 the Medical Board decided Mr Hawkins was fit for work and special hardship allowance was disallowed from 9 May 1956. The tribunal hearing on 8 November 1956 found in favour of Mr Hawkins and awarded a gratuity of £4 17s 0d.</dc:description>
