Archive CreatorBelper Local Board and Urban Sanitary Authority
Administrative HistoryLocal Boards of Health were established in 1848 to administer services which related to public health including sewerage provision and the maintenance of the highways. They were intended for populated areas not covered by Borough Councils. The Public Health Act 1872 brought together Local Boards of Health and Borough Councils as Urban Sanitary Authorities. These authorities became Urban District Councils and Rural District Councils by the Local Government Act 1894, which aimed to extend and define more clearly powers and responsibilities. These councils were abolished in 1974 as part of the reorganisation of local government.
