Administrative HistoryThe Children's Society is a Christian, child-centred, social justice organisation. It was established by Edward Rudolf with the backing of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England. Rudolf's new organisation was originally registered as the Church of England Central Home for Waifs and Strays. In 1946 the name changed to the Church of England Children's Society and in 1982 to The Children's Society. Until 1970 The Children's Society was running children's homes in England and Wales and acting as a leading adoption and fostering agency.

From this time The Children's Society refocused its work with children and young people. It no longer runs any children's homes. Instead, it works with children and young people in need in local communities, with Local Authorities and in the youth justice sector.
