Administrative HistoryAccording to T Bulmer & Co. History, Topography and Directory of Derbyshire (Preston, 1895) the Working Men's Institute and Reading Room was built in 1876 at a cost of £300, raised by voluntary subscriptions. The account book contains a register of members on its first pages, and refers to the "Working Man's Institution" rather than "Working Men's Institute". The organisation is believed to have continued until some time after the second world war.
Custodial HistoryThis item was donated by a private individual to Derbyshire Record Office in September 2006, along with other items now held under references D6688 and D5775/3. No further information is known about the provenance of the items and how they came to be in the possession of the donor.
