Archive CreatorShuttleworth family of Hathersage Halls
Administrative HistoryHathersage Hall passed from the Eyre family of Padley to Robert Ashton sometime before his death in 1687, and later from his younger son Benjamin to William Spencer of Cannon Hall, Yorkshire. The estate came to the Shuttleworth family through the marriage of Christina, eldest daughter and heiress of William Spencer, to Captain William Shuttleworth (1710-1830).

A new hall, Nether Hall, was built c. 1840 for J. S. A. Shuttleworth. By the 20th century, this house was let, the tenants including Thomas Norton Longman, Walter Shirley Davy (1920s), F. C. Fairholme (1930s) and W. J. Wigney (1940s), amongst others. The old Hall was used by the Shuttleworth's as a residence, but was in the tenancy of James Lomax Cockayne in the 1920s. Hathersage Hall was put up for sale in 1983.
Custodial HistoryThese papers were deposited at Derbyshire Record Office in November 2003 and March 2004.
ArrangementDeeds have previously been pre-fixed by the letter 'S' and numbered according to the solicitor's schedule (Gould & Coombe, Sheffield). This order has been retained in the new list, although not all deeds have been deposited with Derbyshire Record Office.

Much of the land acquired by the family has now been sold off, and annotations made by the solicitors regarding the sales can be seen on the original deed bundle covers, retained with the documents.
