Transcript or Index"I must tell you that in dining out the other day I met with a Staffordshire lady who introduced the subject of negro slavery and mentioned that she was a member of an anti-slavery society, upon which I ventured to say that I feared much mischief might arise from the public taking up the question so warmly and from the information I had obtained from a benevolent friend of mine who had lately visited the West Indies, I could not help believing that most erroneous accounts had been published respecting the treatment of the negroes. Our discussion was carried on for a considerable time and I did not fail to bring forward all that I had heard on the subject from you.
