From 1834, with the passing of the Poor Law Amendment Act, parishes in England and Wales began to join poor law unions, for the more efficient administration of relief. The Shardlow Union was formed in 1837. By 1848, it consisted of 46 separate parishes/townships, 33 of which were in Derbyshire, the remainder in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.
