Administrative History | These are the records of the Ilkeston Church Institute. They include minute books from 1883 to 1943, a nomination book dated 1884 to 1974, accounts 1887-1890 and 1957-1971, and booklet to celebrate the Institute's centenary in 1971.
A Mutual Improvement Society was established in Ilkeston in 1871, with meeting taking place in the National Schoolroom once a fortnight. In 1879 the Society began to rent rooms at Station Road. With the increased population of the town came a rise in membership. By 1881 the society, with the patronage of the Duke of Rutland, and membership numbering over 100, the decision was taken to build an institute. The foundation stone was laid on Easter Monday 1883, and members took possession in March 1884.
The Ilkeston Church Institute building on the south side of the Market Place was designed by a local surveyor and Society member, Henry James Kilford. The words 'Church Institute' being highlighted in terracotta lettering on the side wall.
